In Samajwadi Party’s first list of candidates, Dimple Yadav was fielded from the party’s stronghold in Mainpuri. Dimple Yadav, the incumbent Member of Parliament from Mainpuri and wife of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, is set to contest from the seat once again. Mainpuri holds significant importance for the Yadav family, as it has been a stronghold for them. The constituency has previously been represented by Dimple’s father-in-law, Mulayam Singh Yadav, who also served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
Who is Dimple Yadav?
Dimple Yadav hails from a family with a military background. Due to her father’s postings, she had the opportunity to study in various states across India. In 1999, she tied the knot with Akhilesh Yadav, her longtime partner. Initially, their marriage faced some resistance from Akhilesh’s father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, but eventually, he gave his blessings, leading to their union. The couple is blessed with three children, forming a close-knit family unit.
Her foray into politics
Dimple Yadav’s journey into politics has been quite remarkable. It all began when she contested in the 2009 Firozabad by-elections against Raj Babbar, a well-known actor turned politician. Though she didn’t win, it marked the start of her determined efforts in the political arena.
The reason for this by-election was because her husband had won in two places during the general elections, leaving vacant seats in Firozabad and Kannauj. Dimple Yadav then chose to contest in Kannauj in 2012 and won uncontested. Her victory was significant as she became only the fourth person in Uttar Pradesh and 44th in the country to win without any opposition.
This win also made her the first woman from Uttar Pradesh to be elected unopposed in a Lok Sabha by-election. Additionally, she became known as the only woman MP whose husband was a Chief Minister, and her father-in-law was also a member of the same House.
Dimple Yadav continued her political journey by retaining her seat in Kannauj during the 2014 general elections. However, in 2019, she faced a tough challenge as she contested alongside the Bahujan Samaj Party, but unfortunately lost to the BJP candidate.
Despite this setback, she didn’t lose hope. After the passing of her father-in-law, Mulayam Singh Yadav, she stepped up and won the vacant Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency seat with an impressive margin of over 2.8 lakh votes.
