Census 2027 Begins in India; Caste Data to Be Included

The Government of India has started the Census 2027 exercise from today, marking the beginning of a nationwide data collection process.

Officials said the census will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, which will continue till September 2026, details related to housing conditions and basic facilities such as water, electricity and sanitation will be collected. The second phase will focus on population data, including caste-related information.

This will be the first time since Independence that caste-based data will be included in the census. More than 30 lakh personnel have been deployed across the country, using digital devices for data collection.

Enumerators will ask around 33 questions during the process. Citizens will also have the option to submit their details online.

Authorities have asked residents to provide accurate information during the survey. More details regarding implementation at the local level are awaited.
