A woman went to cut grass near Dethan village of Karjan taluka, the accused raped and strangled her to death.
As per details given by SP Sudhir Desai, on the evening of 16th August, as usual, a woman went near the village to cut the grass. At that time, as many as six laborers were sitting near the track and gang-raped her.
After committing the crime, the assailants strangled the woman with a dupatta to destroy the evidence and fled. A complaint was registered at Karjan police station by the family members suspecting gang rape and the teams began an investigation into the matter. Under the guidance of Dy SP Kalpesh Solanki, PI of District Local Crime Branch. D.B. Vala, and Karjan P.I. M.A. Patel, with the help of their staff, Dog squad, and fingerprint experts, launched the investigation.
The team of district police along with dog handler Head Constable Hareshbhai Mohaniya started the investigation and the tracker dog Java sniffed the dupatta and water bottle of the victim on the crime spot and moved ahead to stop at a settlement 500 to 700 meters away from the scene. Java traced the accused back inside a makeshift hut near the railway tracks.
The police caught and interrogated him. He broke down later and confessed to the crime along with five others. The accused Lal Bahadur Girjaram confessed that he and his friends were sitting on the railway track near the farm. They followed the woman who was going to cut grass in the field at that time and raped her. After the crime, they strangled her to death.
On the confession of Lal Bahadur Girjaram, police arrested Dilip Chaudhary (Jharkhand), Jagguprasad Pandu, Pramod Pandu, Ramsurat Pandu, and Arjun Pandor all from UP, in the gang rape and murder of the woman.
