Gujarat Announces Wire-Free City Mission with ₹500 Crore Budget

The Gujarat government has announced the ‘Wire-Free City Mission’ to convert all municipal corporations and municipalities in the state into underground cable-based power networks. The decision was announced by the state Energy Department, with an initial allocation of ₹500 crore for the first phase of the project.

Under the initiative, overhead electric wires across cities will be gradually replaced with underground cable systems. The government said the move aims to improve safety and ensure more reliable electricity supply, especially during monsoon and adverse weather conditions.

The project will begin with major pilgrimage towns including Somnath, Dwarka, Ambaji and Palitana. Around ₹100 crore has been earmarked to develop these locations as power-safe and green zones, ensuring uninterrupted supply during festivals and large gatherings.

The plan also includes strengthening power infrastructure in border areas and critical services such as hospitals, water supply systems, police stations and bus stations. Rooftop solar subsidies of up to 500 kW will be provided for government and local body buildings. Further implementation details are awaited.
