Movie Review: ‘O Romeo’ – Where Love Meets the Underworld
Vadodara Entertainment Desk | 14 February 2026
On a Valentine’s weekend painted in shades of romance, Vishal Bhardwaj’s O Romeo arrives with a darker hue—blending love with revenge. Inspired by real-life accounts documented by Hussain Zaidi, the film revisits the gritty Mumbai underworld of the 1990s. With Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri in the lead, it combines passion with power struggles in a sprawling narrative.
Story Overview (No Spoilers)
At the heart of the film is Ustra (Shahid Kapoor), a razor-wielding contract killer who appears ruthless but carries emotional depth within. When Afsha (Triptii Dimri) approaches him seeking revenge for her husband’s murder, an unexpected connection develops between them. What begins in the narrow lanes of Mumbai stretches across Nepal’s hills and even to Spain’s bullrings. Over nearly three hours, the film balances romance and crime drama.
Performances
Shahid Kapoor reunites with Vishal Bhardwaj for the third time after Kaminey and Haider. He delivers a layered performance, capturing both menace and vulnerability. Triptii Dimri portrays Afsha with controlled intensity, transitioning convincingly from grief to strength. Avinash Tiwary stands firm as the antagonist, while veterans Nana Patekar and Farida Jalal add gravitas.
Direction and Visuals
Bhardwaj’s signature style is evident throughout. Cinematography by Ben Bernhard stands out, especially the symbolic use of colours. The action sequences are stylised yet grounded. Music by Vishal Bhardwaj, with lyrics by Gulzar and vocals by Arijit Singh, complements the mood.
Drawbacks
The film’s 179-minute runtime feels lengthy, particularly in the second half where pacing slows. Some plot turns may appear predictable.
Final Verdict
O Romeo is a mass entertainer that blends romance and thriller elements effectively. Fans of Vishal Bhardwaj’s storytelling and Shahid Kapoor’s performances will likely appreciate it.
