MCC revises cricket laws; new rules to apply from October 2026

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced a major update to the Laws of Cricket, introducing 73 amendments that will come into effect from 1 October 2026. The revised laws will apply to both international and domestic cricket.

One of the key changes affects Test cricket, where play will no longer end early if a wicket falls in the final over of the day. Under the new rule, the incoming batter must take the field and, if conditions permit, the full over must be completed. This change is expected to impact the use of the night watchman strategy.

The MCC has also revised definitions related to dead ball and overthrows, giving umpires clearer authority during play. In another change, laminated bats have been approved for use in open-age club cricket to make the game more accessible at the grassroots level.

Additionally, the MCC has introduced three standard ball sizes for men’s, women’s, and junior cricket, while clarifying situations related to the hit wicket law. The MCC stated that the changes are aimed at improving clarity and consistency in the game. Further guidance will be issued before implementation.
