 Nutrition Experts Highlight Benefits of Traditional Pulse Horse Gram

As interest in nutrition and healthy eating grows, experts are drawing attention to traditional foods that have long been part of Indian diets. One such food is horse gram, locally known as kulthi, which is now being discussed for its nutritional value and health benefits.

Horse gram is a legume commonly grown in South and Southeast Asia and has been used for generations, especially in tribal and hilly regions. Nutritionists point out that the pulse is rich in protein, dietary fibre, and minerals such as iron, calcium, and phosphorus. It also contains B-complex vitamins that help support energy levels.

According to health practitioners, horse gram is traditionally used to support digestion, weight management, and metabolic health. In Ayurveda, it is also associated with remedies for kidney stones and seasonal ailments like cold and cough. Due to its warming nature, experts advise moderation and caution for pregnant women and people with acidity-related issues.

Dieticians recommend soaking horse gram overnight before cooking to improve digestion. It is commonly consumed as soup, khichdi, sprouts, or flour-based preparations. Health experts say including it once or twice a week can be beneficial as part of a balanced diet.
