Ahmedabad: Police data from the past five years shows that 19,182 cases of atrocities have been registered in Gujarat against members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
According to the figures, 13,629 cases were recorded involving Dalit victims, while 3,553 cases were registered involving members of tribal communities. Based on the data, this translates to an average of three to four cases per day involving Dalits across the state. The cases have been reported from multiple districts, including Ahmedabad, Banaskantha, Rajkot, Surendranagar and Kutch.
Data from the last three years also indicates that the conviction rate in cases related to Scheduled Tribes has remained below one percent.
The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee has raised concerns over the figures and questioned the state government’s awareness initiatives for vulnerable communities. The state government has not issued a detailed response so far.
Further details regarding district-wise action and ongoing measures are awaited.
