The ‘Golden’ Ghari Fame on Chandi Padwa in ‘Diamond’ City Surat

“Indulging in Ghari Delicacies on the Festival of Chandi Padwa”

In the bustling city of Surat, known for its diverse culinary traditions, the approach of Chandi Padwa heralds the start of a sweet tradition. As this festival draws near, sweet sellers in Surat have begun crafting the city’s beloved ‘ghari’ in a range of enticing flavors. Surtis, in celebration of Chandi Padwa, eagerly anticipate savoring these sweet treats with their families, beneath the moonlit sky, whether it’s on the streets, at home, or in the charming ‘agasi’ (terraces).

Chandi Padwa: A Surat Special

Surat is famous for its unique culture and traditions, and the celebration of Chandi Padwa is no exception. While the entire nation commemorates Sharad Poonam, Surtis have a distinct celebration on the second day of Sharad Poonam, known as Chandni Padwa. This special occasion is marked by Surtis relishing ‘ghari’ and ‘chawanu’ feasts with their loved ones, creating cherished memories on moonlit nights.

Ghari: A Culinary Gem

Ghari is a confection that awakens the taste buds of every Gujarati. It is synonymous with Surat’s delectable culinary offerings. The special varieties of Surat Ghari include ‘mavo,’ ‘mendo,’ ‘buroon,’ and dry fruits, with Kesar Pistachio Ghari being the most popular among locals. In recent times, the array of choices has expanded, with ‘golden ghari‘ gaining immense popularity.

Golden Ghari: A Luxurious Delight

Golden Ghari, produced by S. Motiram Sweets in Surat’s Bhagal area, has garnered attention for its luxurious ingredients. Crafted with premium dry fruits, pure ghee, and cashew nut coating, and adorned with gold foil, it’s a treat fit for royalty. What makes Surat Ghari even more special is its extended shelf life of 15 days, making it an ideal choice for those sending gifts to family members residing abroad.

A Rising Indulgence

This year, there has been a noticeable increase in the price of Ghari. Prices have seen a hike of 40 rupees, with saffron almond pistachio and saffron pistachio ghari ranging from 800 to 850 rupees per kilogram, and a single piece of Golden Ghari priced at Rs. 1100. Golden Ghari has found a special place in the corporate sector, often chosen as a sophisticated gift option.

The tradition of Ghari in Surat is not merely a culinary experience; it’s a testament to the rich heritage and festive fervor of this vibrant city. As Chandi Padwa approaches, Surtis eagerly await the chance to revel in the sweet delights that have become an integral part of their cultural celebrations.
