23rd July in the history of India

Every event has its historical importance whether birthdays or death anniversaries. Like today, it’s the birth anniversary of Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Chandra Sekhar Azad and their contribution in the Indian Freedom struggle has been immense and is an inspiration for the generations. But apart from these dates, there are other dates worth remembering for.

23 JULY IN INDIAN HISTORY

1555: Mughal emperor Humayun reconquered Delhi after defeating Sikandar Suri in Machiwara and Sarhind battles.

1856: Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born at Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. He was a scholar, a philosopher, a mathematician, an Indian leader who helped in laying the foundation for India’s independence.

1898: Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay was an Indian novelist who wrote in the Bengali language. He was awarded Rabindra Puraskar, Sahitya Akademi Award, Jnanpith Award, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. His famous books are Aarogyaniketan, Kobi, Ganadevata, Panchagram, Kalindi, etc. Based on his writing, there have been films like Shaptapadi.

1904: The Great Indian Peninsula Railway started First Class restaurant cars on its mail trains.

1906: Chandra Shekhar Azad, also popularly known as Azad was born. He was an Indian revolutionary who participated in India’s freedom struggle. He was also the Commander-in-chief of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.

1927: The first Commercial Radio station started its daily radio transmission in India by Bombay Radio Station.

1933: Jatindra Mohan Sengupta died. He was a great leader, lawyer, social worker, freedom fighter, nationalist and president of Bengal Swaraj Party.

1976: Hari Chand is an Indian former long-distance runner. He sets a record for 10,000m in 28.48.72 at Montreal.

1993: Indian National Satellite (INSAT-2B), the second satellite in the INSAT-2 series, was launched.

1996: R. Bhattacharji was appointed as the Narcotics Commissioner of India and is heading the office till now.

1997: India signs U.N. Convention against the torture and other inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
